micro.blog

My main criticism of Micro.blog…

is the main app is in my opinion bad. I apologise for being harsh. The iOS app for posting “Micro.blog” is still just a container of web pages loaded from the web every time. It’s so, so, so slow when connection is slow, which is a problem in many many regions of the world. And anytime one enters into a building that has spotty wifi and large walls.

And the philosophy is to roll out a new app every new feature. The main app is not even “Micro.blog” anymore, it’s just posting and reading others. But the pics are different apps, even the notes are different app. It would be fine if all were awesome apps… But seeing the state of the main Micro.blog app it’s a bit worrying that energies are directed into making more, and more, and more apps, instead of making a really good main app.

Almost every button press that is in a web view is slow or does unexpected things or both. Here are a few video examples:

  1. when scrolling, I can tap as many times I want on the “new post” button in the top right, it doesn’t open until the scrolling stops itself.
  2. when scrolling, if I tap only once to stop the scrolling but the tap falls on the “reply” button, it stops scrolling AND opens to reply. The UI standard (if i’m not mistaken) would be to just stop scrolling.
  3. when scrolling, if I tap once to stop the scrolling but the tap falls on a link, it opens the link. Should only stop scrolling (if not mistaken again)

It’s more difficult to show a video of the extreme slowness bc I need to have spotty internet, at a time that I can make experiments with the app.

I hope this can be useful.

Micro.camp: I really like and want to see more diversity online and in tech sectors. Thanks @jean for the attention you pay to this issue. Can we make a thread of ideas on how to help and give our humble contribution towards increasing diversity? 😀
